Description
Dacron is a high-quality polyester fiber batting designed to be wrapped around upholstery foam inserts for seats and cushions. It is often used in the furniture and upholstery industry to provide a softer and rounder look to furniture. Seats and cushions that use upholstery foam without Dacron wrapped around them can look flat and have straight edges and corners, an unappealing look. Additionally, the fabric cover might not conform to the upholstery foam inside and can show slack and creases due to empty space. Dacron will fill the upholstered cushion and remove any empty spaces. It is also soft and will reduce the friction of foam to aid in inserting foam into furniture covers. It can be used for both seat cushions and back cushions.
Hypoallergenic
Another beneficial characteristic is Dacron’s polyethylene terephthalate (PET) construction. This makes it a hypoallergenic polyester that isn’t absorbent. As such, it is resistant to mold, mildew, rot, and other harmful microorganisms that can collect in furniture over time. Since it can not retain water and other liquids, it is also resistant to stains from spills. This makes Dacron an ideal addition to any outdoor furniture as well.
Recommended Thickness
We recommend wrapping upholstery foam in Dacron that is ½” to 1 ½” thick. This will provide a sufficient visual presentation of puffiness and softness. Thicker Dacron can lead to excessive compression over time that will make the cushion lose its shape. Whereas upholstery foam has a resiliency that allows it to expand back to its original shape for many years after compression, Dacron, being a polyester fiber, does not have this same characteristic. As such, the aforementioned thickness of ½” to 1 ½” will prevent any noticeable compression that is created over time.
If you are ordering Dacron for seats, cushions, or other projects, we recommend the addition of Spray Adhesive in order to easily glue the Dacron to any application.
