Description
Upholstery cotton batting at 50/50 staple is super soft and fluffy. It is used in upholstery to provide a great look and feel for antique furniture, seats, and cushions. Cotton batting provides superior support to polyester batting, as well as loft and soft corners.
Cotton batting is available in different qualities based on its seed count. The more seeds, the lower quality. This can be seen especially in thinner fabric, as the seeds would show through the material. This is partially why it is important to know the percentage count of cotton. Lower quality cotton is 25/75 with more seeds. 50/50 cotton is premium cotton. It is softer, easier to split, and has a low number of seeds.
Cotton batting is normally used in a full or half layer. The thicker the cotton gets, the more tendency it has to pack down. This creates a dip or hammock effect and can be seen in cotton futons. The futon is filled with solid cotton at 3″ to 4″ thick. As a result, the cotton packs down in a relatively short period of time to create the hammock effect. Cotton is also heavy, so the more that is used, the harder it is to lift and adjust.
Upholstery stores use cotton batting because it can slide on foam. Other materials tend to stick to foam, making it difficult to create smooth edges in the finished product. Additionally, cotton batting is easy to tear when applying the material to furniture. Cotton is used to fill voids in antique furniture that are exposed when a muslin is placed over horsehair. This creates a flat and smooth surface.
