What do the cone and base heights mean?
Cone Height – This refers to the height of the raised peaks (or “cones”) on the surface of the foam.
Base Height – This is the thickness of the flat portion of the foam beneath the peaks.
1″ Cone on a 1″ Base – This combination will produce a raised peak (or “cone”) height of 1″ and a base height of 1″, meaning the Egg Crate sheet will be a total of 2″ in height from the tip of the cone to the bottom of the base. The foam block required to produce this combination is 3″ thick. Heights may not be exact.
2″ Cone on a 2″ Base – This combination will produce a raised peak (or “cone”) height of 2″ and a base height of 2″, meaning the Egg Crate sheet will be a total of 4″ in height from the tip of the cone to the bottom of the base. The foam block required to produce this combination is 6″ thick. Heights may not be exact.
A Quantity 1 means 1 pair, but what if only 1 sheet is needed?
Egg Crate foam is produced when one solid block of foam is cut in half with a convoluted saw blade, creating two pieces of the same length and width. As such, a Quantity 1 will produce 2 sheets (1 pair). However, our team can create only 1 sheet if required. Here’s how:
- When entering your measurements, divide your width or length in half.
- Add a Quantity 1 to the cart, which indicates 1 pair.
- Request in the notes box upon checkout that our team adhere your lengths or widths (whichever measurement you divided in half) together.
- Our team will permanently adhere the pair of Egg Crate sheets together in length or width, producing only 1 sheet in your true desired measurements.
What is Egg Crate Foam used for?
Egg Crate foam is used primarily as a foam topper and packaging foam to protect items during shipping. It has top-of-the-line airflow capabilities and is commonly used for therapeutic purposes as the foam’s high and low pressure points provide the body with pressure relief.
One main use is for a mattress topper. This is because the foam has excellent airflow from the cones and contours to your body. This is designed to prevent bedsores and allows the skin to breathe by not maintaining full contact with the surface of the mattress. The cones also allow for pressure point relief, providing more support from the cone tips while also conforming to the user’s body shape through the lower channels.
Another use is acoustical dampening and soundproofing for home studios and home theaters. The design of the cones leads to sound deadening through the reduction of echo as noise hits the cones. We recommend Charcoal foam for this application.
Another key use for Egg Crate foam is in cases that include guns, cameras, and other equipment. It does well to hold devices in place without the need to carve the foam to insert the equipment.
Why is Egg Crate Foam used as a mattress topper?
Egg Crate foam is commonly used as a mattress topper because it is available in a wide range of foam types and firmnesses. Egg Crate foam provides a cool sleeping experience on hot nights because of its cone shape, allowing for excellent airflow. The cones also provide a breathable layer between the user and the mattress.
Egg Crate foam can easily be rolled up for storage and functions as a good foam mattress for visiting guests. It can also be used as a camping pad because it is easy to roll, lightweight, and can be used as a mattress in the back of a truck or the bottom of a tent. This foam shape is designed to fold without creasing, so it is also commonly used as a futon mattress.
Lastly, Egg Crate foam is used as a foam cushion in chairs where a person may sit for long periods of time. The foam is designed to allow high and low-pressure point relief as well as airflow, making for a great seat cushion.

Foam Type Recommendations
There are many different foam types available and it can be difficult to decipher which is appropriate for your application. Each foam has common uses but no foam is all-encompassing. As such, here is a quick overview of the various foams available:
- Qualux Foam: A grade above High Resilience foam. Premium quality foam that is used in top-end upholstery cushions and mattresses.
- High Resilience Foam: A grade above Lux foam. Excellent quality foam that is used in top-end upholstery cushions and mattresses.
- Soft Foam: Excellent quality very soft foam at an ILD 10. It will provide similar softness to Memory foam but will have the bounce-back of High Resilience foam.
- Lux Foam: A grade above High Density foam. It is a very good quality foam for mattresses and cushions.
- Blue Foam: A Grade above Conventional Foam. Good quality foam with a blue color aesthetic. Good price-to-performance ratio for mattresses and cushions.
- High Density Foam: A grade above Conventional foam. Good price-to-performance ratio for mattresses and cushions.
- Conventional Foam: A grade above Polyurethane foam. Inexpensive medium-quality foam that is recommended for backing cushions or mattress toppers.
- Polyurethane Foam: The cheapest foam we offer. Low-quality foam that is typically reserved for protecting items in storage or during transportation, packaging and shipping, arts and crafts, and other recreational applications.
Outdoor:
- Dry Fast Foam: Often used in outdoor furniture and air and water filters because of its open-cell porous construction.
Premium Specialty:
- Rebond Foam: Resilient and durable foam, making it ideal for carpet padding, motorcycle seats, and other high-usage applications.
- Dunlop Latex Foam: Premium quality Dunlop Latex rubber foam that is used in top-end mattresses and cushions, providing excellent comfort, airflow, and durability.
- Hard Foam: With a 240 ILD and 4.50 density, our Hard foam is engineered for demanding applications that require unparalleled rigidity and stability.
- Gel-Infused Memory Foam: Excellent quality foam that has enhanced cooling properties compared to traditional Memory foam.
- Memory Foam Premium: Excellent quality foam that is often used in foam mattresses because of its pressure relief.

Foam Certifications
Most of our foam is CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® approved foam is made without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They are Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

Maximum Foam Dimensions
Foam has a maximum dimension in which it is produced, known as a bun or slabstock. Foam ordered beyond its maximum dimension will be divided to achieve the desired measurement. Based on our current available stock, it may or may not be adhered together before shipment.
